Quick answers
- Choose by activity
- Quad biking, dune bashing, buggies and sandboarding are different activities; check the exact inclusion.
- Compare the full price
- Separate the package price from riding time, transport and paid extras.
- First ride
- Ask for hands-on instruction, suitable equipment and a clearly supervised riding area.
- Children
- A child admission ticket does not establish permission to drive a quad.
Choose the activity first, then the package
If quad biking is the reason for your desert trip, settle the riding time and vehicle arrangements before paying for a camp package. A long afternoon programme can include only a short turn on a quad. For sandboarding, look for a package that names the activity and explains whether equipment and instruction are included.
Choosing where to ride or sandboard? The Red Sand Dunes guide covers arranged outings in the Al-Muzahmiya area and the arrival details to settle first.
Start with the two options below, then use our Riyadh desert safari guide to compare the wider camp experience. Prefer a cliff walk to riding? The desert day trips guide helps you choose a different outing.
| Activity | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Quad biking / ATV | A vehicle you ride yourself; confirm its model, riding area, supervision and actual time on the bike. |
| Sandboarding | Sliding on sand using a board; ask what equipment, instruction and suitable slope the operator provides. |
| Dune bashing | A driven 4×4 session. Its inclusion does not mean you get a quad ride. |
| Dune buggy | A separate vehicle activity. Do not assume a buggy add-on is interchangeable with quad biking. |
Two packages to compare
Prices checked 12 October 2026. These are package examples, not standard hourly rental rates. Confirm the final total, your chosen date and the activity arrangements with the seller.
| Package | Displayed price | Activity and transport |
|---|---|---|
| Riyadh Desert Safari | SAR 380 per person, advertised offer | Quad bikes and sand ski listed; transport extra. |
| Visit South via Visit Saudi | SAR 397 adult base price for 16 October 2026, including VAT | Sandboarding listed as a SAR 46 extra; Riyadh city transfers included. |
Riyadh Desert Safari: a camp package with quad bikes
Riyadh Desert Safari’s Red Dunes package lists dinner, camp access, quad bikes and “sand ski”. The camp is described as east of Riyadh. The advertised programme is eight hours; that is not eight hours of riding. Transport and 4×4 dune bashing are excluded.
The page accepts enquiries rather than confirming seats for a selected date. It does not specify quad riding minutes, the vehicle model or solo-driver requirements. Ask for those details and the sand-sport equipment provided. Its general “Age 5+” label should not be read as permission for a five-year-old to drive.
Confirm your meeting point and departure time directly: the page contains both own-car meeting instructions and a mall departure timetable. Get the transfer charge and final total before committing.
Visit South: a driven dune trip with optional sandboarding
The Arabian Experience Camp half-day tour on Visit Saudi is a different choice: a four-to-six-hour outing with a professional dune driver, camp access and Riyadh city pickup and return. Sandboarding is an optional SAR 46 per person; meals also cost extra. A dune buggy appears separately as a SAR 187 add-on. Quad biking is not listed as an inclusion.
Choose this option if you want transport and a driven dune session, with sandboarding added to the day. Confirm the board session, equipment, instruction and extra charges before booking. The base booking price does not cover every activity shown in the description.
For a first quad ride, prioritise instruction
Choose a provider that can explain the vehicle, the practice area and how the session is supervised. Ask whether a qualified instructor provides hands-on training before the ride. If the answer is only “easy for everyone”, keep asking until the arrangements are clear.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s ATV guidance recommends hands-on training, a helmet, eye protection, boots, gloves, long trousers and long sleeves. It also says to stay off paved roads and never carry more people than the vehicle has seats; most ATVs are designed for one rider. These are general safety recommendations, not a statement of Saudi licensing rules.
Do not book on the assumption that no licence is required. Ask the operator which documents, experience and restrictions apply to the exact vehicle and activity. Read the waiver, damage-deposit terms and insurance exclusions before payment. A tour insurance listing does not establish that every optional ride is covered.
Keep children’s admission separate from riding eligibility
A child ticket or a “family friendly” label tells you little about who can drive a quad. Get activity-specific age, size and supervision requirements in writing, and check the manufacturer’s restrictions for the model provided. Do not put a child on an adult quad or add a passenger to a single-rider vehicle.
For a family outing, choose a camp where someone can comfortably skip the ride. Confirm shade, seating, toilets and adult supervision for children who are not participating. Ask separately about sandboarding suitability; it is not automatically suitable for every age or ability.
| Ask before paying | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How many minutes do I actually ride? | Whole-tour duration includes transfers, meals and waiting. |
| Which vehicle and riding area? | The vehicle, terrain and supervision determine whether the session fits your experience. |
| Who may participate? | Tour admission, driver eligibility and passenger rules are different questions. |
| What does the final price include? | Confirm equipment, transfers, taxes, deposits and optional activities. |
| What happens if conditions change? | Agree the weather, cancellation and unused-activity policy. |
Make sandboarding a manageable part of the day
If you are new to sandboarding, ask for an instructor-led introduction and an appropriate slope. Find out how you return to the top and allow for the effort of walking on sand. Keep the sliding area separate from vehicles and follow the provider’s equipment and stopping instructions.
For mixed groups, a short optional session works better than building the whole outing around an activity some people may skip. Check whether boards are shared and whether your booking reserves a session, rather than assuming unlimited turns.
Plan the journey and the weather
Ask for the confirmed meeting point or pickup coverage and the return arrangement. “Red dunes” is used by different tour listings; it is not one universal entrance. Use the operator’s directions for your booking and confirm whether your own vehicle is suitable for the approach.
Choose the day around conditions, not just sunset photos. Read the desert safety guide for weather checks, supplies and emergency contacts, and the best time to visit Riyadh guide for seasonal planning. Avoid treating a late start as a guarantee against heat, dust or poor visibility.

Frequently asked questions
Is quad biking included in every Riyadh desert safari?
No. A package may include a driven 4×4 session or offer a buggy separately. Confirm that quad biking is named, then ask about riding time and the vehicle.
Does a package price cover sandboarding?
Not always. Some packages list it as included; others charge separately. Check equipment, instruction and the final price before booking.
How long will I spend on the quad?
Ask for the actual riding minutes. A tour’s advertised duration also includes transport, meals, other activities and waiting.
Can children drive the quads?
Do not infer driving eligibility from a child ticket or general tour age. Confirm the operator’s activity rules and the manufacturer’s restrictions for the exact vehicle; children should not use adult quads.
Do I need a driving licence?
Confirm the documents and restrictions with the operator for the exact vehicle and activity. This guide does not establish a blanket licence exemption.
Where should I meet the operator?
Use the confirmed meeting point or pickup instructions supplied for your booking. Different tours use the name red dunes; do not assume they share one entrance.
